This is
one of the frequently asked questions I receive from customers, they are
traveling northern mountain region of Vietnam and wonder whether they should go
to Ha Giang or
Sapa.

Well, if this is your first time to Vietnam, I recommend that you go
to Sapa. Some people argue that most opinion in the social media recommend Ha
Giang instead of Sapa as Sapa is very touristy, my answer is Ha Giang town
itself is nothing interesting. If you want to mountain scenery of Ha Giang
province, you need to
drive a motorbike for 3-4 days minimum. In Sapa, you can
hike to the rice fields from the town and see spectacular scenery within an hour
or two of driving. Not to mention ethnic villages. Sapa town is touristy, sure,
but that was meant as such when it was built, so it's actually a pretty place.
Ha Giang town is a typical boring mountainous town that is now is inundated by
so-called backpackers all talking about "the loop" due to some intense marketing
from local tour companies. So it's getting touristy as well. And what I don't
like about Ha Giang is if you go to this place in public holidays such as Labour
day or National day you will see big groups of local visitors all wearing red
national flag T-shirts all over the place.

Compare attractive things to do in Ha Giang and Sapa
In terms of attractive things to do, choosing between Ha Giang and
Sapa depends on your preferences and interests. Here's a brief comparison to
help you decide:
- Scenery: Both Ha Giang and Sapa offer stunning landscapes, but they are
different in character. Ha Giang is known for its rugged, mountainous terrain
with breathtaking views, while Sapa is famous for its terraced rice fields and
picturesque valleys.
- Trekking: Both destinations offer excellent trekking opportunities, but
Sapa is more developed in terms of tourism infrastructure for trekking. There
are well-marked trails and
homestay options available. Ha Giang, on the other
hand, offers more remote and challenging trekking experiences, suitable for
adventurous travelers.
- Culture: Both regions are home to diverse ethnic minority groups, each
with its own unique culture and traditions. In Ha Giang, you may encounter
ethnic groups such as the Hmong, Dao, and Tay, while in Sapa, you'll meet mainly
Hmong and Dao communities. Both offer opportunities to learn about local
customs, try traditional foods, and interact with locals.
- Accessibility: Sapa is more accessible and easier to reach from
Hanoi,
with regular buses and trains available. Ha Giang, while becoming more popular,
is still relatively off the beaten path and may require more planning and effort
to reach.
- Crowds: Sapa tends to be more touristy and can get crowded, especially
during peak seasons. Ha Giang, being less developed for tourism, offers a more
authentic and off-the-beaten-path experience with fewer crowds.
Ultimately, if you prefer a more developed tourist destination with easier
accessibility and a well-established trekking infrastructure, Sapa might be the
better choice. However, if you're seeking a more adventurous and
off-the-beaten-path experience with rugged landscapes and authentic cultural
encounters, Ha Giang could be the perfect destination for you.
